Austria's National Council approved sweeping changes to asylum laws on Wednesday, implementing the EU Asylum Pact with new restrictions on family reunification and faster procedures.
The reforms, described by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) as 'the biggest tightening of asylum laws in 20 years', passed with votes from the governing coalition parties. The legislation introduces procedural accelerations, longer detentions at borders, and a quota system for family reunifications starting in July.
Karner emphasized the pact is 'no magic bullet, but an absolutely important, necessary step' to relieve pressure on Austria's education and social systems. He noted Austria is currently exempt from EU solidarity mechanisms due to being overburdened in recent years.
