Vienna, 20 May 2026

On Wednesday, the Austrian National Council approved the implementation of the EU Asylum Package, marking the country's most significant asylum and immigration law reform in two decades.

The reform, described by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) as the 'largest asylum and immigration law reform in 20 years', introduces a quota system for family reunification starting in July. This replaces the current temporary stop on family reunification, which remains in effect until September.

The new law includes several tightening measures, such as more grounds for detention, shorter objection periods, and sanctions in basic care for asylum seekers. People with a low probability of receiving asylum will undergo accelerated procedures, while vulnerable individuals will be identified through multiple screenings.
