The Austrian Association of Private Broadcasters (VÖP) has sharply criticized plans for a 12% levy on streaming revenues, warning it would lead to significant job losses and weaken media diversity.

Economic Impact and Job Losses

The VÖP estimates the new tax would impose an additional €20 million burden on the sector, with potential job cuts in the "three-digit range." The association notes the industry has already seen a 10–20% reduction in jobs over the past year due to declining advertising revenue.

"Seit Jahren fließen immer mehr Werbebudgets an ausländische Digitalkonzerne ab," the VÖP stated, highlighting how foreign tech firms have siphoned advertising budgets from domestic media. The economic situation for private broadcasters is described as "bereits jetzt existenzbedrohend" (already existentially threatening).
