Pettenbach, 11 July 2026
In a major fire at a pig fattening farm in Pettenbach in the district of Kirchdorf an der Krems in Upper Austria, around 600 pigs perished in the flames on Saturday morning.
Location and situation of the blaze
As the operations command confirmed to the APA, the fire broke out on Saturday morning on the grounds of an agricultural operation in Pettenbach and spread rapidly to the stables. The entire livestock of the affected pig fattening farm – according to the helpers' figures, around 600 animals – could no longer be saved. The animals died in the flames.
Difficult operation under acute risk of collapse
According to the Pettenbach Volunteer Fire Department, more than 20 fire brigades from the region were deployed. With around 200 members, the emergency personnel fought the flames and prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent buildings. According to the operations command, the firefighting efforts were difficult because the fire created an acute risk of collapse in the stables, and the emergency personnel were therefore unable to enter the buildings.
The command of the major operation was led by Christian Kohlbauer, Commander of the Pettenbach Volunteer Fire Department. He coordinated the arriving fire brigades and the distribution of fire engines around the blaze site. As the APA reporting shows, firefighting was not yet fully completed by late afternoon: crews were still busy checking for possible hotspots in the late afternoon.
