Mexico City, June 11, 2026

At the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, the Mexican national team will face South Africa on June 11, 2026 (kickoff at 9 p.m.) in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup.

A Venue Steeped in History

The Azteca Stadium in Mexico City is the venue for the opening match of the 2026 World Cup on Thursday evening. Host nation Mexico welcomes South Africa at 9 p.m., with the match broadcast live on ORF 1. For Mexico, this is already the third World Cup opening held in their own arena, following 1970 and 1986.

The stadium was inaugurated in 1966 and at the time held more than 110,000 spectators. After several renovations, its capacity today stands at around 87,000 seats. The arena is located at more than 2,000 meters above sea level, which, in Pelé's assessment, changes the behavior of the ball: "Das Verhalten des Balles macht Spielern Probleme. Er fliegt viel weiter als in tiefer gelegenen Stadien," the Brazilian said after Brazil's 4-1 World Cup final victory over Italy.
