Bangkok, September 28, 2026

Bangkok has declared a disaster situation after days of heavy rainfall, while the governor of the Thai capital, Sittipunt, acknowledged that the city's canals are completely full and water can hardly be pumped out any longer.

The disaster declaration applies to large parts of the greater Bangkok area. According to Thai media, among them Thai PBS, numerous residential buildings and restaurants along the canal banks are under water. Traffic routes in multiple districts are also flooded, severely affecting the daily lives of millions of residents. Authorities have set up emergency shelters and urged residents in low-lying neighborhoods to move to higher-lying areas.

Government Declares Disaster

Governor Sittipunt wrote on social media: "Wir versuchen das Wasser abzupumpen, aber die Kanäle der Stadt sind voll." With this, he described the limits of the measures taken so far. The city government is attempting to stabilize the situation with mobile pumps and additional sandbag barriers, but the inflowing water from surrounding provinces is exacerbating the situation.
