Austrian swimmer Jakub Maly identified clear need for optimization within the team despite a medal at the European Swimming Championships and is criticizing above all the lack of professional support for the athletes between events.
Jakub Maly, who won a medal for Austria at the championships, views his team's performance with mixed feelings. While the results had shown that the squad could keep pace internationally, structural weaknesses had simultaneously become apparent that had held back the full potential, he said in his review of the events.
Particularly noticeable was that some swimmers showed a marked drop in performance toward the end of the championships. Maly attributed this, among other things, to the high strain from multiple starts, possible semifinals, and relay appearances. The lack of professional accompaniment in the so-called Mixed Zone — that is, the area in which athletes give interviews after the competition — had been an additional factor.
