In the Greek region of Kastoria, three bears have been illegally killed according to the animal welfare organization Kallisto, once again triggering a debate about the protection of large predators in Europe.
The animal welfare organization Kallisto reported that three bears had been illegally killed in the region around Kastoria. The animals are among the strictly protected species in Europe, and killing them violates Greek law as well as international protection regulations. Kallisto has been advocating for the preservation of the bear population in the border areas of Greece for years and regularly documents cases of poaching.
The organization sharply criticized the killings and demanded consistent criminal prosecution of those responsible. "No excuse for vigilantism" – this is how the organization described it in a statement. The killing or injury of a bear is punishable and violates Greek and international protection regulations, it added.
