Berlin, 17 October 2026

The SPD, the Greens, and Die Linke explained the status of their coalition negotiations in Berlin on Saturday afternoon and announced, among other things, plans for the socialization of large housing stocks.

The press conference took place on Saturday afternoon, 17 October 2026. Representatives of the three parties presented their negotiation results to date to the media. They made clear that they had already coordinated a number of fundamental points among themselves. This includes the issue of housing policy, which has been a subject of debate in Berlin for years.

Housing as the Core Issue

At the center of the announcement is the so-called socialization of housing. This refers to the transfer of large housing stocks into public ownership in return for compensation. The plan builds on the referendum "Enteignen Deutsche Wohnen & Co." ("Expropriate Deutsche Wohnen & Co."), which a majority of Berlin voters had approved in 2021.
