Berlin's Finance Senator Stefan Evers (CDU) criticized free offerings such as school lunches for well-earning parents as unjust in an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and combined his upcoming nomination as the CDU's lead candidate for the state parliament election on September 20 with a fundamental speech against a left-green government in Berlin.

Evers, who is to be proposed to the CDU state executive on Monday for the official lead candidacy, clearly positioned himself against his political competitors in the interview. "Ich stehe für einen modernen Konservatismus. Und ich werde alles tun, eine linksgrüne Regierung in Berlin zu verhindern," said the Finance Senator. At the same time, he explicitly spoke out against free offerings that also benefit parents with higher incomes: "Ich halte auch nichts von Kostenlos-Politik für gut verdienende Eltern, die sich Schulmittagessen leisten können. Ich empfinde das als ungerecht."
