Berlin's S15 begins service: Six minutes from Gesundbrunnen to Hauptbahnhof

Interim station beneath the Hauptbahnhof

Beneath the Hauptbahnhof, an interim station has been built for the new line. „Unter dem Hauptbahnhof ist für die Linie ein Interimsbahnhof entstanden." This provisional station serves as an interim solution until further construction phases of the major S21 project are realised. The S15 also stops at the Wedding S-Bahn station.

Part of the major S21 project

According to Deutsche Bahn, the S15 is only a first building block of the larger S21 project. „Der neue Abschnitt ist allerdings nur ein kleiner Baustein des großen Projekts S21." In subsequent construction phases, the line is to be extended to Potsdamer Platz and later on to Yorckstraße. In the long term, a new S-Bahn station called Perleberger Brücke is also planned to connect the Europaviertel to the S15.

Plans for the new route have existed for years, but were repeatedly delayed. „Die Pläne für die neue Strecke gab es schon seit Jahren, aber auch immer wieder Verzögerungen." The connection was originally supposed to be completed back in 2017. „Eigentlich sollte die Verbindung schon im Jahr 2017 fertig sein." Deutsche Bahn cited unforeseen ground conditions, the COVID-19 crisis, material shortages due to the Ukraine war, and a lack of personnel as reasons: „Unvorhergesehene Bodenbedingungen, die Corona-Krise, Materialengpässe aufgrund des Ukraine-Kriegs und Personalmangel sorgten der Bahn zufolge dafür, dass sich das Projekt immer weiter verzögerte."

Years of delays

Approval and acceptance processes also delayed the project further. „Zuletzt dauerten dann auch noch die Zulassungs- und Abnahmeprozesse länger als gedacht." In the meantime, according to Deutsche Bahn, all acceptance procedures and technical inspections have been completed. For the second construction phase, the company expects the planning approval decision in the autumn.

Alexander Kaczmarek, Deutsche Bahn's Group Representative for Berlin, expressed confidence: „Ich habe so ein bisschen die Befürchtung, das Ding wird sogar noch viel besser laufen, weil es einfach eine so gute Verbindung in Richtung Hauptbahnhof darstellt." He pointed out that the line offers a particularly attractive connection to the Hauptbahnhof.

However, before an S-Bahn runs directly from Potsdamer Platz to the Hauptbahnhof, at least another decade will pass at the current state of planning. The current launch of the S15 therefore marks a first, albeit small, step within the overall S21 project, which will keep Berlin busy for years to come.
