The Federal Bureau of Railway Accident Investigation (BEU) confirmed in its final report, published on Wednesday, that the train accident of 27 July 2025 near Riedlingen was caused by a landslide triggered by heavy rain.

Course of events on the evening of 27 July 2025

The regional train was traveling on the route from Sigmaringen to Ulm on the evening of 27 July 2025 at around 6 p.m. when it derailed near the Riedlingen district of Zell-Bechingen in the Biberach district. According to the Federal Bureau of Railway Accident Investigation (BEU) in Bonn, the derailment occurred at a speed of around 150 kilometers per hour after masses of earth slid from a slope onto the track bed.
