Todd Blanche, President Donald Trump's pick for attorney general, faced a high-stakes Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, defending a roughly $1.8 billion Justice Department settlement with the president and pledging that an anti-weaponization fund tied to the deal is not moving forward.

Blanche, who has led the Justice Department since April after Trump elevated him from deputy to acting attorney general, is seeking to drop the word "acting" from his title. His confirmation hearing opened on Wednesday at 9 a.m. ET before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he testified under bipartisan pressure to explain a settlement with Trump that included the creation of an anti-weaponization fund intended to compensate Trump allies for alleged prior government mistreatment.
