Najaf, July 8, 2026

The body of Iranian Revolutionary Leader Ali Khamenei arrived at the airport of the Iraqi holy city of Najaf on the late evening of July 7, 2026, where funeral processions with more than two million participants, according to their own figures, began on the morning of the following day.

The Iranian head of state died on June 28, as Iranian state media report, at the age of 86. He had led the clerical system in Iran since 1989. The transfer of his body to Najaf marks the start of a multi-day funeral ceremony at the most important Shia pilgrimage sites in Iraq.

According to Iraqi state media, the aircraft carrying the coffin arrived at Najaf International Airport on the evening of July 7. From there, the body was transported through the streets of the city on a truck. During the procession, numerous mourners shouted chants that can be translated as "Death to America" and "Death to Israel," according to eyewitness accounts.
