Researchers at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (Boku) Vienna have determined, in a roughly ten-year experimental series at the "HyTEC" research facility in Lunz am See, under which conditions the operation of hydropower plants is less stressful for fish.

The findings were published in the journal "Communications Earth & Environment." The focus was on so-called hydropeaking impacts – rapid fluctuations in water levels and flow velocities that occur when hydropower plants quickly increase or reduce their output.

One factor that proved highly problematic was when particularly large amounts of cold water were discharged into the water body. This also occurs in connection with the operation of power plants and is referred to as "thermopeaking." According to a Boku press release, aquatic animals are exposed to these conditions along a total of approximately 800 kilometers of Austria's rivers.
