Bonn, 17 June 2026
After ten days, the preparatory meeting for the 31st World Climate Conference, attended by some 6,500 delegates from politics, science, and business, came to an end in Bonn on Wednesday.
The conference in the former German capital is regarded as a key milestone ahead of the World Climate Summit in November. According to the organizers, drafts and proposals were developed over the past ten days that will now feed into the further negotiation process. These include measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which are to serve as a basis for political decisions in Antalya.
Turkish Electrification Initiative
A focus of the discussions was the initiative presented by host country Turkey to step up the electrification of industry and transport. The Turkish government is proposing to increase the global share of electricity in final energy consumption from the current 20 percent to 35 percent over the next nine years. To this end, factories and cars are to be operated more heavily with electricity, and climate-damaging energy sources such as coal, oil, and gas are to be replaced to a greater extent.
