Bontus opens Kite European Championships with podium finish in Akyaka

Already in preparation for the regatta in the Turkish coastal town, the athlete from Lower Austria had emphasized that he regarded the competition as an important form test ahead of the further season highlights. The third place at the opening matches this assessment and underlines his ambition to mix it up at the top of the European field.

The European Championships in Akyaka will be contested over a total of five races. Four of them are still to come, so Bontus still has plenty of opportunity to make up ground in the overall standings. The opening thus only lays the foundation for the upcoming races.

Overall standings and starting position

In the overall standings, Bontus is in fifth place after the first race. This puts him behind the leading competitors, but he has maintained contact with the top. The gap to the podium places is manageable after one of five races.

Among the other title favorites is Maximilian Maeder, who is listed as one of the chasers in the European Championship standings. The field in Akyaka thus brings together experienced international kite surfers, so that each individual day of competition is likely to set the tone for the final placement.

With his performance on the first day of racing, Bontus has in any case laid the basis to surf along in the battle for the top places in the upcoming races. The consistency he has already demonstrated in the past is now set to make the difference at the European Championships in Akyaka as well.
