Bosnian-Serb general Ratko Mladić dies at 84, years after genocide conviction

Mladić was convicted in 2017 of genocide for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, the killing of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys, and of terrorising the civilian population of Sarajevo during a years-long siege. He was sentenced to life in prison, a verdict later upheld on appeal.

The conviction marked the culmination of one of the most protracted war-crimes trials in modern history. Mladić had evaded capture for more than a decade before being arrested in Serbia in 2011 and transferred to The Hague to stand trial.

The convictions

Reaction to his death was measured. Emir Suljagić, a Bosnian official and survivor advocate, said: 'Ratko Mladić is dead, and there's not much to say about it. The fact [that he's dead] does not change much. It doesn't bring back the dead. It doesn't erase the mass graves. It doesn't alter the verdicts. It doesn't turn a criminal into a historical figure.'

Suljagić's remarks reflected a wider sentiment among survivors and Bosnian officials that Mladić's death closes a chapter but does not alter the historical or judicial record. Survivors' associations said the focus would remain on memorialisation and on locating the remains of victims still listed as missing.

Mladić had long claimed that he was defending his people during the Bosnian War. His lawyers argued unsuccessfully at trial that he was acting within the chain of command and that the killings at Srebrenica were a tragic but lawful military operation. Courts rejected both lines of defence.

Reaction in Bosnia and Serbia

The UN-established tribunal that tried Mladić has since been succeeded by the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals, which has continued to handle remaining cases and appeals arising from the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.

Mladić's death leaves unresolved questions about the fate of victims who remain unidentified and about the broader political legacy of the Bosnian War in the region. Bosnian officials have indicated they will not push for a state funeral or official honours.

In Serbia, reactions were mixed. Some politicians and veterans' organisations continued to defend Mladić's wartime record, while human-rights groups urged a clearer public reckoning with the crimes for which he was convicted. International monitors have noted that official Serbian commemorations of Mladić have periodically strained relations with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Legacy and unresolved questions

For survivors of Srebrenica and the siege of Sarajevo, his death reopened public discussion of the events of the early 1990s, when ethnic conflict following the breakup of Yugoslavia produced some of the gravest atrocities in Europe since the Second World War.
