Vučić defended the decision as an act of respect for an "aging soldier." Critics accuse him of using the honor to serve nationalist narratives and undermine the process of reconciliation in the region. The opposition in Serbia warned of a further deepening of the rifts between Belgrade and its Western partners.

International reactions were not long in coming. The EU Commission stated that it "takes note of the decision" and pointed out that the recognition of international court rulings remains a prerequisite for Serbia's accession to the Union. Open Questions Regarding Transfer to Serbia

The announcement also raises questions regarding the transfer of Mladić to Serbia.
