Serbia Prepares State Funeral for Convicted Genocide Perpetrator Ratko Mladić

International Criticism of the Honor

Critics accuse the Serbian leadership of downplaying the crimes of the Bosnian War through the planned honor. Journalist Snežana Čongradin wrote in the newspaper Danas: "Es ist auch sehr schwer, in einem Land zu leben, in dem die Verlautbarer des Völkermords, den Ratko Mladić vor Ort verübte und bei dem in drei Tagen über achttausend Bosniaken getötet wurden, an der Macht sind." Those who are powerful enough to defend, support, justify, and deny genocide and not break with that past have the ability to control the population through violence, brutality, lies, and grave deception, Čongradin continued.

Protests came immediately from Sarajevo and several European capitals. Survivors of the Srebrenica massacre stated that a state honor for Mladić would be an affront to the victims and their relatives. The International Commission on Missing Persons pointed out that to this day several thousand bodies from the mass graves of the Bosnian War have not been identified. Human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch called on the Serbian government to reconsider the plans.

According to reports, the burial is to take place in Belgrade, though more precise details about the location and timing were not initially released. Mladić was sentenced to life in prison in The Hague in first instance in 2017 and was finally found guilty on appeal in 2021. He was considered one of the main perpetrators of ethnic cleansing during the Bosnian War between 1992 and 1995.

Protests and Reactions at Home

Resistance to the plans is also stirring within Serbia. Opposition politicians spoke of a historic disgrace and a burden on the country's European integration. The newspaper Danas published several critical commentaries. At the same time, Mladić's supporters gathered in front of his home to express their grief and celebrate the government's decision.

EU politicians expressed concern about the signal effect of the funeral. A spokesperson for the European Commission stated that the EU expects accession candidates to clearly distance themselves from war crimes. The United Nations and the OSCE called for clarification on the handling of war criminals in the Western Balkans.

Against the backdrop of ongoing accession negotiations with the EU, pressure on Belgrade is mounting. Diplomatic circles in Brussels pointed out that a state honor for a genocide perpetrator convicted by a UN tribunal could significantly burden the reform process. The US government also demanded an explanation.

Impact on the EU Accession Process

Domestically, the debate is also interpreted as a test of the government's handling of its recent past. Vučić has for years been caught between European expectations and nationalist-conservative voter groups. Observers see the decision as a clear signal to the domestic base.

Mladić's lawyer, Nenad Vujić, had repeatedly sought retrials against the verdict in recent years and criticized the conviction as politically motivated. A final decision on possible further legal remedies is pending.

Relatives of the victims announced they would take action against the plans before international courts. Several survivors reacted with outrage to the news of the funeral. The Srebrenica massacre of July 1995 is considered the worst war crime in Europe since World War II.

The Serbian government has not yet commented on the international protests. Observers expect the controversy to escalate further in the coming days.
