Ratko Mladić is dead: Bosnian war criminal died at the age of 82

Reactions in Bosnia and Serbia

Mladić's death means, legally, that he will no longer have to answer to a court for his actions. International prosecutors had him arrested in 2011 after years of hiding in Serbia. The verdict against him is considered one of the most important in post-war history and a milestone of international criminal justice.

At the same time, proceedings against other accused individuals continue in The Hague. The legal reckoning with the crimes committed during the Bosnian War between 1992 and 1995 is not yet complete. Victims' families continue to fight for compensation and for the search for the remains of their relatives.

The Srebrenica Massacre and Its Consequences

In Belgrade and Banja Luka, politicians reacted in different ways. Some spoke of the end of a dark chapter, while others expressed themselves cautiously. In Serbian society, Mladić remains a polarizing figure: for some he is regarded as a national hero, for others as a symbol of the most serious crimes.

Mladić was born in 1942 in the village of Božanovići and rose during the Yugoslav wars to become a general and commander of the Bosnian Serb army. He was a key figure in implementing the plan for the ethnic division of Bosnia and the expulsion of the non-Serb population. During his period of command, there were systematic bombardments of Sarajevo over almost four years, as well as the ethnic cleansing of wide stretches of territory. International law speaks in these cases of crimes against humanity and war crimes, meaning that civilians were deliberately targeted.

The Srebrenica massacre was later recognized as genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal and the International Court of Justice. The international community had nevertheless failed in its concept of a UN-protected zone in Srebrenica. The reckoning with this collective failure continues to this day.

International Reactions and Ongoing Proceedings

Mladić's family announced that they would apply for the transfer of his body to Serbia. The Dutch authorities must now decide on the modalities of a burial. At the same time, the legal reckoning continues; some observers fear that his death could make the search for previously undiscovered mass graves more difficult.

International reactions to his death were restrained. UN Secretary-General António Guterres declared that justice for the victims must continue to be pursued regardless of the death of individual perpetrators. In Germany, too, which was significantly involved in the UN protection force in Srebrenica, politicians commemorated the victims.

The Mladić case stands as a symbol of the difficulty of prosecuting war crimes legally even decades after the acts. Many proceedings against accomplices are not yet concluded. The international community sees in this a warning that impunity must not be a permanent condition.
