Brandenburg Theaters Raise Ticket Prices: Rising Costs Force Venues to Adjust

The Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam is raising subscription prices in some categories by up to 16 percent. Management explained that cost increases such as collective bargaining raises in the public sector and in artists' salaries have not been fully offset by public funding for years. "Sparen, dass die Schwarte kracht. Rücklagen werden aufgebraucht. Preise werden erhöht," the venue stated. However, according to the theater, single ticket prices will remain unchanged this season. A Category 1 subscription with ten flexible subscriptions costs 250 euros there.

Hans Otto Theater Potsdam

The Kleist Forum theater in Frankfurt (Oder) is raising single ticket prices by 3 to 5 euros, which according to a spokesperson corresponds to an increase of 13 to 20 percent. The Kleist Forum does not have its own ensemble and recorded around 50,000 visitors in 2025. A spokesperson formulated the venue's expectation: "Wir hoffen, dass die Förderstruktur weiterhin eine verlässliche Programmplanung ermöglicht und zugleich sicherstellt, dass tarifliche und inflationsbedingte Kostensteigerungen aufgefangen werden."

Kleist Forum and Staatstheater Cottbus

The Staatstheater Cottbus announced a price increase of around 10 percent – the first adjustment in ten years. At the same time, the venue wants to reduce the variety of its subscriptions and trim back a so-called "Wildwuchs" (overgrowth) in subscription structures. A highlight of the coming season's artistic program will be a new production of "Romeo und Julia." A spokesperson provided no information on visitor numbers and capacity utilization.

The Neue Bühne Senftenberg is responding differently. The venue is not planning any price increases for the coming season, as it considers current prices to have reached the limit of what is reasonable for audiences. A premiere ticket on the main stage costs between 29 and 34 euros there. However, the venue warns of medium-term risks: "Mittelfristig würden gleichbleibende Zuwendungen bei weiterhin steigenden Kosten, von denen auszugehen ist, aber zu einer substanziellen Gefährdung des Theaterbetriebs in Senftenberg führen," it said. The venue named personnel costs from collective bargaining increases as the greatest burden.

Neue Bühne Senftenberg: No Increase, but a Warning

In the current 2025/2026 season, the Hans Otto Theater recorded around 100,100 visitors, according to its own figures; most recently, prices there had also been raised at the start of the 2025/2026 season. The Neue Bühne Senftenberg reported a total of 57,090 tickets sold by early June 2025. According to its own account, the Hans Otto Theater has already cut one production per season in recent years.

The theater scene is thus responding to a general cost trend: inflation and energy costs are making operations more expensive, while open budget questions are making planning more difficult. At the Hans Otto Theater, for example, further financing is uncertain because the state of Brandenburg and the city of Potsdam have not yet adopted a budget for 2027. The venue's management described the financial situation as strained and expects growing budget pressure.

Programmatically, however, the venues are looking ahead. At the Hans Otto Theater, Brecht's "Mutter Courage" and a new stage adaptation of the film "Solo Sunny" are announced for the 2026/2027 season. Overall, the wave of price increases illustrates how much publicly funded culture in Brandenburg is suffering from the interplay of collective bargaining increases, energy costs, and unresolved public budgets.

The coming season will show whether the price increases will be sufficient to financially stabilize the venues – or whether further cuts to productions and offerings will be necessary. The sector remains dependent on reliable funding commitments and swift budget decisions in Potsdam and the municipalities.
