A British study published in "Scientific Reports" concludes that e-scooters pose a higher risk of head impacts than previously assumed, particularly in dense urban traffic.

The study analyses e-scooter accidents and compares them with other modes of transport. The result calls into question the perception of these often-considered-harmless small electric vehicles. According to the researchers, the injury pattern in collisions involving e-scooters differs from that of comparable accidents.

The central finding concerns the frequency of head injuries. The authors write: "Die Wahrscheinlichkeit für Aufpralle mit dem Kopf wird erhöht durch den überwiegend städtischen Verkehrsraum, in dem solche Gefahren dicht beieinander liegen und Zusammenstöße mit Fahrzeugen, Fußgängern und Straßenmöbeln häufig vorkommen." They point to an environment in which numerous sources of hazard are concentrated in close proximity.
