Berlin, 11 June 2026

The German Bundestag on Thursday held the first reading of a bill by the CDU/CSU and SPD that would skip the 4.2 percent pay rise for members of parliament scheduled for 1 July, with the move backed by the Greens, AfD and Left.

The draft law, titled "Anpassungsverfahrensabweichungsgesetz 2026" (document 21/6330), proposes a one-time deviation from the automatic adjustment procedure under Section 11(4) of the Abgeordnetengesetz. Members' monthly compensation would stay at 11,833.47 euros rather than rising to 12,330.48 euros, a difference of 497.01 euros that the bill's drafters say would have amounted to almost 500 euros per month. The Bundestag's monthly compensation is aligned with the salary of a judge at a federal supreme court, at pay grade R 6.

Referral to committee

After the first reading, the bill was referred to the Committee for the Examination of Elections, Immunity and Rules of Procedure (Ausschuss für Wahlprüfung, Immunität und Geschäftsordnung) for further deliberation. A vote on the bill is expected in the week after next, and a majority in the Bundestag is considered secure given that the Greens, AfD and Left have also signalled support.
