Berlin, July 10, 2026

The German Bundestag on July 10, 2026 passed a reform of the Federal Police Act with the votes of the CDU/CSU and SPD parliamentary groups, which provides for, among other things, new powers regarding deportation custody, drone use, and real-time biometric surveillance.

The amendment was passed with the votes of the Union and SPD - the Left and Greens voted against it, the AfD abstained. After the summer recess, the Bundesrat must now also deal with the draft law and approve it. The currently applicable rules for the approximately 55,000 federal police officers still largely date from 1994.
