Burgenland Governor Doskozil criticizes Interior Ministry’s police reform plans

The criticism carries political weight because the Burgenland governor is an influential voice within the SPÖ. As a regional politician whose state has direct access to the police structures, he sees the effects of the plans particularly close to the daily lives of those affected. His statement is part of a series of similar reactions from the federal states, which had raised concerns about the reform in recent weeks. Dispute over the reform structure

At its core, Doskozil’s criticism is directed at the organizational restructuring of the police. He fears that the reform will undermine the existing duty-roster system and make it harder to reconcile work and family life. The weekend duties and shorter recovery periods he cites are already particularly burdensome factors in police work. He is concerned that an increase in such duties could also raise staff turnover and weaken operational readiness in the long term.

From the Interior Ministry’s perspective, however, the reform is intended to improve efficiency and make police work more citizen-oriented. The department refers in internal papers to allegedly tightening resources and the need to adapt structures. Doskozil considers this argument contrived and accuses the federal government of disguising the real savings behind modernization rhetoric. He has not yet provided detailed evidence of the financial effects.

Political dimension and possible consequences

The public dispute comes at a time when the SPÖ is reassessing its position toward the federal government. By addressing the public directly through Facebook, Doskozil bypasses the usual channels and speaks directly both to police employees and to voters in Burgenland. Observers see the move as an attempt to keep the issue on the national political agenda. It remains to be seen whether this will lead to formal resistance in the Federal Council or a state parliament session.

If the Interior Ministry sticks to its plans, further reactions from the federal states are to be expected. Police staff representative bodies have also criticized individual reform points, using arguments similar to Doskozil’s. The coming weeks are likely to show whether the reform in its proposed form is politically feasible or whether further negotiations will be necessary.

Doskozil’s reaction also highlights a conflict between regional interests and federal policy that traditionally plays a role in Austria. When individual governors openly reject security-sector reforms, pressure on the minister responsible increases. It will therefore be difficult for the federal government to defend the project solely on substantive grounds. At the same time, it relies on cooperation with the states, for example in ensuring a police presence in rural regions such as Burgenland.
