In the early morning hours of July 18, 2026, a 21-year-old Austrian driver left the road with his car in the municipal area of Assling in the district of Lienz, broke through the guardrail, and plunged down a steep slope.

According to the current state of the investigation, the driver left the roadway at around 2:45 a.m., broke through the guardrail at that location, and subsequently plunged down a steep slope. The vehicle rolled over following the terrain profile and came to a stop on the hillside.

Accident sequence in the early morning hours

In addition to the driver, there were other passengers in the vehicle. An 18-year-old Austrian was able to free himself from the wreckage on his own after the impact, but was so seriously injured that he had to be recovered by the alerted rescue services. He was transported to the Lienz district hospital in critical condition.
