The State of Carinthia is providing a funding budget of four million euros in order to swiftly implement heat protection measures in elementary schools, kindergartens, and childcare facilities.
State Governor Daniel Fellner (SPÖ) presented the package on Wednesday together with Municipal Affairs Councillor Marika Lagger-Pöllinger (SPÖ) and Education Councillor Peter Reichmann (SPÖ). The background is the increasingly frequent heatwaves in June, which are putting a strain on school and kindergarten operations. Fellner explained that the earlier start to summer holidays by two weeks, which he advocated and would like to see implemented from summer 2027, should not remain the only measure.
Specifically, despite budget pressures, the state would immediately release four million euros, as Fellner said at the press conference: "Dafür wird das Land trotz Spardruck sofort vier Millionen Euro freimachen, um Hitzeschutzmaßnahmen für Schulen und Kindergärten umzusetzen." This is intended to put municipalities in a financial position to make structural and technical adjustments that take effect quickly.
