Petronell-Carnuntum, 23 August 2026

The Roman amphitheatre in Petronell-Carnuntum opened its summer season on 23 August 2026 with a first evening of Goethe's Faust, staged by director Torsten Fischer and anchored by a devil's-eye prologue in which Mephisto, played by Dominique Horwitz, addresses the audience directly.

The performance took place in the Roman amphitheatre of Petronell-Carnuntum, the Lower Austrian open-air stage that has become a fixture of the region's summer calendar. According to reports carried by the Austrian Press Agency, the production opens with a prologue in which Mephisto steps forward and explains the terms on which he intends to operate. Critics describe the prologue as manic in tone, with Horwitz leaning into the devil's appetite for mischief rather than treating him as a distant tempter.
