Carsurfing in parking lot leaves 19-year-old with life-threatening injuries

He fell from the vehicle and struck his head on the asphalt. After initial treatment by an emergency doctor, the 19-year-old was taken to LKH Südweststeiermark, Wagna site, with life-threatening injuries. Doctors are fighting to save his life.

First aid by passersby

Two other people were in the vehicle besides her. Two witnesses rushed to help immediately, provided first aid and alerted the emergency services. Without the quick intervention of the passersby, the situation would likely have turned out even worse.

According to police, the 19-year-old vehicle driver did not hold a valid driver's license. A breathalyzer test, however, came back negative. A possible criminal prosecution of the driver is now also on the table.

Investigations and legal consequences

Investigations into the exact course of the accident and into the criminal consequences are ongoing. Police are examining whether, in addition to driving without a license, further offenses such as negligent bodily injury or endangerment of physical safety apply.

The incident once again throws a spotlight on the dangers of so-called dares in road traffic. Experts have been warning about carsurfing for years, in which people cling to or onto moving cars. Even the smallest uneven surfaces or an abrupt steering maneuver can lead to a fall.

Carsurfing as a life-threatening risk

The role of the occupants and bystanders is also now the subject of the investigation. Police are asking any additional possible witnesses to come forward. The exact sequence of the drives across the parking lot and the number of people involved are to be reconstructed.
