The Chancellery has provisionally shelved Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil's plans for a sugar tax, and has ordered a revision of the project.

Three Tiers Based on Sugar Content

The Chancellery has provisionally halted the sugar tax being pushed forward by Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil. As reported by the Finance Commission Health, citing government circles, the project is to be fundamentally revised before it is pursued further. The brake applied by the Chancellery is seen as a clear signal in the ongoing political coordination process.

Klingbeil's model envisaged a graduated levy on sugary drinks. Three tiers were planned depending on sugar content: 26 cents per liter from five grams of sugar per 100 milliliters, 32 cents per liter from seven grams, and 38 cents per liter from ten grams. The aim was to curb the consumption of particularly sweet lemonades, cola drinks, and other soft drinks, while at the same time generating additional revenue for the federal budget.
