Hungarian chess grandmaster Judit Polgár has rejected the proposal by Prime Minister Péter Magyar to run as an independent candidate for the office of Hungary's Head of State.

The 49-year-old Judit Polgár, who lives in Budapest, announced her refusal late on Sunday evening via Facebook. In it, she wrote that she did not feel she had the strength to take on this historic responsibility. In her own words, she stated: „Ich habe nicht das Gefühl, dass ich die Kraft habe, die historische Verantwortung für die Vereinigung einer gespaltenen Nation zu übernehmen.“ In addition, she announced that she would do everything in her power „um einen neuen, unabhängigen und angesehenen Präsidenten der Republik bei der Verwirklichung dieser Ziele zu unterstützen."
