China has imposed an immediately effective, temporary export ban on helium to ensure the domestic supply of the gas, as Beijing's Ministry of Commerce announced on Thursday.
China has imposed an immediately effective, temporary export ban on helium to ensure domestic supply. The ban was announced on the previous Friday and took effect on the same day, according to a statement from the Chinese Ministry of Commerce.
Ministry spokesperson He Yadong explained the measure on Thursday at a press conference in Beijing. China is a major importer of helium, and the country wants to prevent exporters from selling gas abroad due to high market prices and thereby endangering domestic supply, as reported by the analyst group Trivium China.
Trivium China estimates the People's Republic's import dependency at more than 85 percent of its own helium needs. About half of China's helium imports come from Qatar, one of the most important global suppliers.
