China's Ministry of State Security warned on Friday of alleged espionage by sensor-equipped sea creatures such as turtles and fish in waters, blaming foreign intelligence services.
What are the allegations?
In a statement published via online services, the ministry warned — under the headline "Deep Beneath the Waves, Undercurrents Stir" — of a new form of underwater espionage. The Ministry of State Security referred in a statement to "spy turtles" and "spy fish." The ministry described this as a "serious threat to the country's national security."
According to the information provided, such animals had been "swimming around in certain areas" and had gathered important data including water temperature, salinity, and currents. The data collected had reportedly been "transmitted abroad via satellite." They had reportedly captured data such as water temperature, salinity, and currents.
