The suspects reportedly lured German scientists to China under the pretense of giving paid lectures to civilian audiences. However, these lectures were allegedly held in front of employees of state-owned defense companies.

The couple is expected to appear before an investigative judge at the Federal Court of Justice, who will decide on their pretrial detention.

Previous Espionage Cases

This case follows previous espionage allegations in Germany. In May 2025, three German nationals were charged with working for Chinese intelligence, and in April 2024, an assistant to AfD MEP Maximilian Krah was arrested on similar suspicions.

The assistant, Jian G., was accused of being a Chinese intelligence operative since 2002 and allegedly passed information about the European Parliament and the AfD to Chinese handlers after Krah's election in 2019.

German authorities have been increasingly vigilant about foreign espionage, particularly in sensitive technological fields. The recent arrests highlight ongoing concerns about intellectual property theft and national security.
