The United Nations said on Friday that civilian deaths in Ukraine in July rose to their highest monthly level since May 2022, according to a monitoring summary circulated to reporters. UN human rights monitors attributed the increase to intensified Russian shelling, missile strikes and drone attacks on populated areas, many of which hit infrastructure used by civilians.

According to the same monitoring figures, the majority of recorded casualties were caused by explosive weapons with wide-area effects, including artillery, multiple-launch rocket systems and aerial bombs. The eastern Donetsk and Kharkiv regions accounted for the largest share of fatalities, followed by the southern Mykolaiv and Kherson regions, where frontline fighting has been most active.
