The United Nations registered the highest monthly number of injured and killed civilians in Ukraine in May since April 2022, according to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Dramatic increase compared to the previous year

According to the United Nations, more than 16,000 civilians have been killed and more than 46,000 injured since the war began in February 2022. In May of this year alone, the UN registered at least 274 killed and 1,763 injured civilians, according to the report.

The increase compared to the same month the previous year is dramatic: it corresponds to a 93 percent rise compared to May 2025, when 191 killed and 865 injured were registered. Cities far behind the front line were once again particularly affected.
