Laxenburg, 05 August 2026

Climate researcher Daniel Huppmann of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg in Lower Austria classifies the current record heat in large parts of Europe as climatologically exceptional.

Huppmann referred on Wednesday to an analysis by the WWA, according to which the current temperatures under similar weather conditions in the mid-1970s would have been significantly lower. According to this, daytime temperatures in the affected regions would have been calculated to be around 3.5 degrees Celsius lower and nighttime values around 2.4 degrees Celsius lower at that time.
