Climate scientist Stefan Rahmstorf has warned that weather extremes previously expected in Europe only every 500 years could now occur roughly every 50 years, attributing the shift to human-caused global warming of about 1.4 degrees Celsius.
From a 500-year event to a 50-year event
Rahmstorf, a climate scientist at the Potsdam-Institut, made the remarks in an interview published by the Rheinische Post, drawing on widely used statistical methods for estimating the return periods of rare weather events. His figures compared the frequency of such extremes under the historical climate with their projected frequency at today's level of global warming. Under the warmer regime, the same extremes return roughly ten times as often.
