The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has required Google to provide publishers in the UK with tools that allow them to exclude their content from AI-powered search features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode.

Background: Growing concern over traffic losses

The order from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) was announced on Wednesday and is considered the world's first regulatory measure of its kind for Google's search services. The background is publishers' concern that AI-generated answers from Google could drastically reduce traffic to their websites. The authority is thus responding to the strategic market status that Google had already received for its search service in October 2025.
