Coach Crash in Eastern Hungary: Twelve People Die, Driver Apparently Fell Asleep

Victims and Background

Information on the nationality of the victims was initially only partially available. According to initial media reports, travellers from Poland were also among the passengers. The Hungarian authorities established contact with the consulates of the affected states in order to identify and inform relatives.

Emergency services were deployed in large numbers. Several ambulances, fire engines and helicopters were dispatched to the scene. The M3 motorway was temporarily fully closed in the affected section, and traffic was diverted.

Rescue Operation and Closure

According to eyewitnesses, the coach was the only vehicle involved; there were no other vehicles implicated in the accident. Residents reported that the bus suddenly veered off the road while in motion and rolled into the ditch without any apparent evasive manoeuvre.

Following the accident, the Hungarian authorities set up an information hotline for relatives. The police opened an investigation into the cause of the accident. At the centre of the investigation is the question of why the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The Hungarian government expressed its dismay at the disaster. In an initial statement, the government offered its condolences to the families of the victims and announced a comprehensive investigation into the incident. Condolences also reached the Hungarian government from abroad, including from Poland and Bavaria.

Investigations into the Cause

Coach accidents with a comparably high death toll are rare in Central Europe. In the past, similar incidents – such as the 2018 bus accident in Bavaria, in which several occupants from Poland lost their lives – had raised questions about the safety of long-distance coaches and compliance with driving and rest times.

Experts point out that driver fatigue is one of the most common causes of serious road accidents. EU regulations on driving and rest times also apply to coaches; violations are repeatedly detected in several European countries. The Hungarian police announced that they would also examine possible violations of these regulations.

Recovery and clearance work at the accident site was still under way on Sunday evening. The identification of the victims was to be completed in the coming days. The Hungarian judiciary announced a formal investigation.

Reactions and Political Debate

On the Hungarian side, the M3 motorway is a toll road. Coaches travelling on this route often carry tourists and migrant workers between Budapest, Miskolc and the eastern border. There was heavy holiday traffic on the route on Sunday.

The incident triggered a broad debate in Hungary about the safety of long-distance bus travel. Transport experts called for tighter controls and better monitoring of driving times. The question of how many passengers a coach may carry on long-distance journeys was also raised once again.
