In a coach accident on the M3 motorway near Mezökeresztes in eastern Hungary, twelve people were killed on Sunday after the bus left the road and crashed into a roadside ditch.

The coach left the road on the M3 motorway near Mezökeresztes, around 140 kilometres east of Budapest, and plunged into a roadside ditch. As reported by the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (dpa), twelve people died in the accident. According to initial findings, the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. The exact circumstances are still being investigated by the authorities.
The M3 motorway connects Budapest with the eastern Hungarian city of Miskolc and continues towards the Ukrainian border. Mezökeresztes lies between these two cities and belongs to the Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén region. The route is one of the country's most important transport arteries and is heavily used both by coaches and by commuters.
