Repatriation of victims of the bus accident in Hungary has begun

Background of the accident

According to initial findings by the police, the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel. This preliminary assessment was announced by the investigating authorities, while at the same time emphasizing that the investigations are still ongoing. Hungary's Ministry of the Interior announced a comprehensive investigation into the course of the accident in order to clarify the exact causes.

The occupants were predominantly Polish citizens who were on their way back after an organized pilgrimage or trip in Hungary. Many of them came from the region around the city of Miskolc in the northeast of the country. Consular support for the relatives was coordinated both in Budapest and in Warsaw.

Hungarian rescue services were deployed in large numbers at the scene. In addition to police and fire services, rescue helicopters were also used to transport the injured as quickly as possible to hospitals in Miskolc, Eger, and Debrecen. Several clinics briefly reported an increased emergency capacity.

Rescue operation and medical care

The German authorities were also informed, as the bus had departed from Bavaria, specifically from the Heimstetten area. The Bavarian Ministry of the Interior is in close contact with the Hungarian and Polish authorities in order to identify possible affected persons with German passports and to support their relatives.

In the Polish capital, the Ministry of Defense prepared the provision of the military aircraft. The aircraft is to take off from the military airfield and bring the victims directly to Poland, where they will be handed over to family members. Two additional medical transport aircraft are intended exclusively for severely injured survivors who require medical care during the flight.

Repatriation with military aircraft

The incident caused dismay on social media and in the political sphere. Representatives of the AfD expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and called for a swift clarification of the cause of the accident. Hungarian and Polish politicians also expressed their sympathy and emphasized the need for cross-border cooperation.

In the Mezökereszte region, which is located near the accident site, helpers set up a support center for relatives who traveled in from Poland and other countries. Psychologists and chaplains provide support to the families there. The aid organizations are working with the consulates of both countries to handle the necessary documents and formalities for the transfer swiftly.

Investigations and political reactions

The public prosecutor's office in Hungary has opened a formal investigation on suspicion of negligent homicide and bodily harm. If the initial suspicion that the driver fell asleep is confirmed, criminal consequences could follow. At the same time, traffic experts are examining whether technical defects on the vehicle may have played a role.

The Hungarian government announced that it would in future monitor safety standards for international coaches more strictly. This includes increased speed checks, steering and rest period inspections, as well as technical inspections of buses entering from neighboring EU countries.

According to the plans of the Polish authorities, the repatriation is to be completed within the coming days. As soon as the identification of all victims is complete, the names of the deceased will be officially published by the responsible consulates.
