Collective Bargaining Round in NRW Retail: Verdi and Employers Agree on Wage Increases

Stores were sometimes only partially open, and customers had to expect restrictions. Now the negotiated increases are to flow into paychecks promptly. Both sides emphasized that the collective bargaining agreement would restore reliability for the coming months.

The exact percentage increases and the structure of the compromise were announced by the lead negotiators at a joint press conference in Düsseldorf. The term of the new collective agreement and the staggering of the increases are to be communicated in the companies in the coming days. Verdi announced that it would inform members promptly about the negotiation result and consult on possible further steps.

Observers assess the agreement as a signal for the ongoing collective bargaining round in the retail sector of other German states. Regional bargaining rounds frequently orient themselves toward the western German pilot agreement, explained the Institute for Employment Research (Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung). The NRW comparison could thus also serve as a benchmark in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Lower Saxony.

For employees, the agreement means that the demands for a noticeable wage increase that had been open for months are at least partially fulfilled. Verdi had increased pressure on the employers' side in recent weeks with a wave of warning strikes. These measures had helped bring movement into the negotiations, according to union circles.

Employer representatives pointed out that the economic situation in retail remains tense. Rising energy costs, consumer reluctance, and ongoing competitive pressure are putting the industry under strain. At the same time, they acknowledged the performance of employees and had therefore agreed to the compromise.

With the agreement, the new collective bargaining agreement takes effect retroactively. Employees who had to accept loss of income during the strike phases are to receive compensation, according to the bargaining committee. This sets a sign of appreciation, Verdi explained.

The North Rhine-Westphalian bargaining round is considered one of the most important indicators for wage developments across the entire German retail sector. Since North Rhine-Westphalia, with its approximately 370,000 employees, is the largest collective bargaining region in the industry, the pilot agreement carries particular weight. Economic researchers expect that the agreed increases will increase pressure on other regions to follow suit promptly.

The compromise provides for a moderate percentage increase in several stages, combined with a fixed base raise. In this way, the agreement aligns with Verdi's core demands without crossing the red lines drawn by the employers' side. From negotiation circles, it was said that the solution had been prepared over several days in informal talks.

Both sides expressed relief after the agreement. Verdi announced that it would immediately suspend the strikes and enter into dialogue with members about accepting the result. The employers' side, in turn, called on employees to fully resume work in the coming days in order to quickly make up for the consequences of the industrial action measures.
