Seville, Spain — May 17, 2026

The conservative People's Party (PP) retained power in Spain's Andalusia region but lost its absolute majority in Sunday's election, leaving it dependent on the far-right Vox party to form a government.

Election Results and Political Shifts

The PP secured 53 seats in the 109-seat Andalusian parliament, five fewer than in the previous election and two short of the 55 needed for an absolute majority. Vox, meanwhile, gained one seat, bringing its total to 15, and will now play a decisive role in supporting the PP-led government.

The Socialist Party (PSOE), led by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, suffered a historic defeat, winning just 28 seats—down from 30 in the last election. This marks the PSOE's worst performance in Andalusia, a region it dominated for nearly four decades until 2018.
