A wildfire near the small Catalan town of La Bisbal d'Empordà has already destroyed around 1,300 hectares of scrubland and forest, according to authorities, and forced some 45,000 residents in ten municipalities to remain in their homes.

Scale of the Fire

The fire broke out on Friday morning near the municipality of La Bisbal d'Empordà in the hinterland of the Costa Brava tourist region, the Catalan police said. Catalonia's Interior Minister, Núria Parlón, said the flames had already devastated 1,280 hectares. The burned area is roughly equivalent to 1,800 football pitches. Due to heavy smoke, authorities urged around 45,000 people in ten municipalities east of Girona not to leave their homes.

According to Spanish emergency services, more than 200 firefighters are deployed, supported by around 300 vehicles as well as eight aircraft and helicopters. In addition, some 200 members of the military emergency units were en route. Four other smaller fire outbreaks were each being tackled by at least 100 emergency personnel. Rescue workers evacuated 150 people, including 70 children from a summer camp.
