The Council of States (Ständerat) decided on Thursday on a significantly stricter equity capital rule for the foreign subsidiaries of major banks such as UBS and is demanding 90 percent equity capital.
With this decision, the smaller chamber of the Swiss Parliament opted for a considerably sharper version than the previous draft. Specifically, foreign subsidiaries of a major bank are to be backed with 90 percent equity capital in the future. The previously envisaged figure was considerably lower. With its decision, the smaller chamber clearly distances itself from the National Council, which had previously taken a milder course on the issue.
