After a search that lasted several days, rescue workers on Wednesday recovered a couple at 1,600 meters altitude in the Dolomites, after the two had lost their way during a circular hike and endured six days in the wilderness.
According to the Italian newspaper "Il Resto del Carlino," the couple had set out the previous weekend for a regular circular hike in the Dolomites. In the mountains they strayed from the trail and could no longer find the way back. In addition, darkness and a deep precipice made any further descent impossible, so the two had to spend the night outdoors on Saturday at 1,600 meters altitude.
The situation worsened further in the first hours: thirst and hunger became the couple's greatest enemies. "Until then we had been drinking our own urine so as not to die of thirst," Davide told the newspaper "Il Resto del Carlino." Only after several days did the missing hikers, according to the reports, discover a small stream and wild strawberries that enabled them to survive.
