A German mountain hiker suffered a fatal accident on Tuesday afternoon during a tour in the Hohe Tauern in East Tyrol, after falling at the Türmljoch in the municipality of Prägraten am Großvenediger.

According to the emergency services, the man had set out alone in the early afternoon on a high alpine tour in the area of the Türmljoch. When he had not returned by evening, companions raised the alarm and notified the emergency control centre.

At around 9.30 p.m., several search teams from the Prägraten mountain rescue, along with five mountain rescue dogs and an alpine police officer, began the ascent on foot toward the Türmljoch via various approach routes, as the mountain rescue service reported. At the same time, search flights took off from the surrounding valleys.
