The Lucerne Centre Council of States member Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger presented a cross-party No committee against the neutrality initiative in Bern on Monday. The vote will be held on September 27.

Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger described the initiative before the media as "naive and dangerous." The proposal is unnecessary and dangerous, the Lucerne Centre Council of States member argued in Bern on Monday, explaining the cross-party engagement against the popular initiative, which will be voted on on September 27. Gmür-Schönenberger belongs to the Centre faction in the Council of States and appeared in Bern together with representatives of other parties before the press.

With the cross-party committee, opposition is taking shape against the initiative, which aims to enshrine a stricter interpretation of Swiss neutrality in the constitution. Supporters argue that a clearer neutrality rule would create predictability in foreign policy. Opponents fear, however, that Switzerland would thereby lose room for maneuver in foreign policy and could see its role as host country to international organizations and conferences jeopardized.
