Roughly one in eight adults in Germany holds cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, according to a new survey, while the federal government deliberates over a reform of the tax treatment of such digital assets.

The latest survey conducted by the polling institute YouGov on behalf of the management consultancy BearingPoint shows that around twelve percent of the adult population in Germany own cryptocurrencies. Digital currency has thus found its way into significantly more portfolios than just a few years ago. Most holders focus on well-known assets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, and Cardano.

The spread of cryptocurrencies varies considerably by age and gender. According to YouGov, younger respondents and men show an above-average affinity for digital assets. In the higher age groups from 55 years onward, the share of owners drops noticeably; many older people cite uncertainty and a lack of experience as reasons why they have not yet bought digital currencies.
