The Cuban regime critic Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara arrived in Miami, in the US state of Florida, on Saturday after having previously spent five years in Cuban custody.

Rubio Confirms Arrival and Increases Pressure on Havana

As the US State Department announced, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed Otero Alcántara's arrival in the United States on Saturday. Rubio had previously publicly advocated for the artist's release and used the announcement to once again pressure the Cuban government. Rubio stated that Otero Alcántara had arrived in the USA the previous day and reiterated his demand for the "immediate release of the more than 700 wrongfully imprisoned political prisoners" in Cuba.

Otero Alcántara had previously spoken on his Facebook page, announcing that he wanted "to continue developing visions for the freedom of Cuba" in the USA. He is considered one of the most prominent voices of Cuba's independent art scene and became internationally known for his advocacy of freedom of expression and human rights. His departure marks a turning point after years of imprisonment and international appeals for his release.
